My father's name was Michael Maynard.He served with the Royal Marines and was deployed to Afghanistan with 40 Commando.In 2010, during operations in Helmand Province, he was killed by an improvised explosive device.My mum once told me about the day the officers came to our house.She said they stood at the door for a long moment before knocking.The moment she saw them, she knew.I was eleven years old.For a long time, I didn't know what to do with that loss.

Years later, I joined the Army myself.Perhaps I wanted to understand the life my father had lived.Perhaps I simply wanted to feel closer to him.I came home.Not unchanged, though.An explosion left me with severe burns and months of recovery ahead of me.There were days when I struggled to recognise the person looking back at me in the mirror.Yet through every operation, every setback, and every difficult day, my mum never treated me any differently.She would sit beside me, squeeze my hand, and say:"It's alright, love. Mum's here."Now the roles have changed.My mum is undergoing chemotherapy.

Last week, she was unwell for most of the day after treatment.When she finally fell asleep, she was still holding my hand.As I sat beside her bed, I found myself thinking about my father.Thinking about everything he never had the chance to see.He never saw me wear a uniform.He never saw me build a life of my own.He never saw me discover a love for working with wood.He never saw the wind chimes, birdhouses, and handmade pieces that now fill my workshop.And then a simple thought came to me.My father never had the opportunity to come home and care for her.But I do.So each morning, I unlock my workshop and begin making wind chimes.One after another.Not because I expect to become wealthy.Not because I am chasing success.

I make them because they allow me to spend more time with the person who has never left my side.Every piece I finish helps me remain close to her while I still can.And in some small way, it feels as though I am carrying on a responsibility my father would have gladly taken on himself.
